In the early spring of 1928, a home owned by Elroy Smith, that was located at the southeast corner of Paul's Path and Middle Country Road, across from Popie’s Restaurant as we know it today, was hit by lightning. The home burned to the ground, as neighbors found out that the lack of water and equipment and the knowledge of how to fight a fire was not present at this time. As time passed, a meeting was called for on May 22, 1929 in the upstairs loft of Jake Baczensky’s gas station. It was at that meeting that the Coram Fire Department was formed. The first piece of equipment was a 1919 Brockway solid rubber tire Chemical Truck. At this point, the Coram Fire Department started to move ahead. The purchase of a 1930 model “A” chassis was made. The body, made of wood, was removed with the chemical tank and remounted to the new chassis. In 1933, the construction of a two bay 40 ft. wide by 100 ft. deep fire house was built. As fund raising and donations were the only means of finance at that time for those volunteers, on September 21, 1940, hard times took its toll. The building was sold on the auction block for a judgment foreclosure. At this point, the volunteers of the Coram Fire Department built our second fire house on Route 112, across from what was, in those days, known as the Coram Rug Works. It was a two bay 30 ft. wide and 40 ft deep building – enough to house the 1930 model “A” fire truck. In early 1954, the REO Pumper with a five hundred gallon pump, with a high pressure 4th stage pump with a 1000 gallon booster tank was purchased. The Town of Coram was beginning to grow with developers and many people relocating to Coram. In 1959, a new three bay fire house was built on Middle Country Road, as more equipment was needed as the town was starting to grow. Another 750 gallon pumper was added to our fleet in 1960. In 1965, our first Cadillac ambulance was put into service. An addition to the Main House was made in 1976. There was a need for additional protection and equipment leading to the building of Station #2 on Route 112 and Pine Road. Additional protection and equipment was also needed in 1987, leading to the building of Station #3 on Coram Mt Sinai Road and Whiskey Road. Once again, due to the growth of our community, in 2003, a new main Fire Headquarters was build and occupied on Middle Country Road. The Coram Fire Department now consists of: Truck Company #1, Engine Company #1, Engine Company #2, Engine Company #3, Fire Police, Senior Active Company, the Ladies Auxiliary, Hellraisers Drill Team, EMS Company #1, and Junior Company #1. In our 76 years of service, we all have given some, but two of our people have given all: Firefighter Vernon Edwards died May 1, 1930, a charter member, aged 18 years and Firefighter Dennis Rodd, died March 13, 1993, age 47 years.
